The couple was born in St. Louis, she was moved to New York City at the age of only a few days. In 1991, Barnard College awarded her a Bachelor's degree in Art History. The position she held was apprentice for An American Place, a restaurant located in the city of New York for a year. Guarnaschelli began her culinary career in the earlier years, while helping her mom try recipes when she was editing her books at home. The beginning of her culinary journey began when she watched her mother test recipes at home as she edited cookbooks. Guarnaschelli eventually became the executive chef for Butter. Guarnaschelli was a competitor against Cat Cora on Food Network's Iron Chef America 2007 Farmers Market Battle. She has since appeared as an Iron Chef America judge and in 2011 competed in The Next Iron Chef season four, where she finished third-place finisher. Additionally, she was eliminated in her final competition, the Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast. The fourth season of The Next Iron Chef, she began working as a sous chef to Iron chef Geoffrey Zakarian. She was the host of Food Network's The Cooking Loft With Alex Guarnaschelli in 2008, where she teaches a small group of students on the best ways to cook classic meals.
